Lush Takes a Stand

We’ve always known Lush had a thing for exquisite bath bombs and branding.

Today, we learned they also have a heightened level of awareness for the toxicities of social media.

Starting November 26th, Lush will pause its Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok in all operations covering 48 countries.

The press release states:

"In the same way that evidence against climate change was ignored and belittled for decades, concerns about the serious effects of social media are going largely ignored now," the company said in its press release.

"I've spent all my life avoiding putting harmful ingredients in my products. There is now overwhelming evidence we are being put at risk when using social media," Lush CEO Mark Constantine said in a statement.

"I'm not willing to expose my customers to this harm, so it's time to take it out of the mix," he added.

A month or so ago, Girls Geared For Greatness engaged in a similar conversation as we wrapped up a pitch session with District C Students. In the concluding events, the students were encouraging heightened social media presence for our organization to increase our following and growth.

My response?

“This conflicts me. How can we be an organization rooted in empowering girls when we know that these platforms are blatantly toxic and counterintuitive to the growth and development our immediate audience?

There was silence.

Our solution for now:

Be a positive force on the platforms, but be wary.

And, educate. Educate, educate, educate.

Is that enough?

It may not be.

For today, we are celebrating the small victory of a major company saying CHANGE is needed.

Grab a bath bomb.

Close out your social media apps.

And, enjoy the presence of the moment.
